This chair is based on the original Westport Chair, which was the predecessor to the Adirondack chair. Thomas Lee designed it while vacationing in Westport, New York in 1903, and as you might have guessed, Westport is in the Adirondack Mountains. It had been patented as the Westport Chair, but people adopted the present day name because it was so much more appealing. It has also gone through many design changes over the decades. And I, like everyone before me, have put my own contemporary spin on it.

Because the original proportions have withstood the test of time, I’ve kept the design and dimensions nearly identical to the original. Thomas Lee really nailed it more than 100 years ago.

The chairs are made of 5/8 inch thick Baltic Birch. That’s the same material I’ve been using for the past 18 years.

These come unfinished. However, experience tells me that while it would be best to keep these on a porch or under an awning they can also be used outdoors if they have been properly sealed. I’d recommend a deck seal that you can easily reapply over the years.

It comes as a kit that is really easy to put together. The instructions are easy to follow as well.
